Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s biggest retailer, reported higher quarterly profit on Tuesday as discounts attracted US shoppers looking for bargains on essentials such as food and pharmacy items.items.
Net income rose to $3.02 billion, or 76 cents per share, in the first quarter ended April 30, from $2.83 billion, or 68 cents per share, a year earlier.
Consumers are seeking Wal-Mart’s low prices, especially on basic items such as groceries, shampoo and cleaning supplies, as the U.S. economy falters and food and fuel prices soar.
The economic downturn comes as Wal-Mart has gone back to basics, trumpeting its low prices and slowing its aggressive expansion plans to improve results at its existing U.S. stores.
